Can't get to stay on?

My Spirits exhibit the following behavior: When plugged in to charge, the LED flashes red a few times, as if "trying" to get into charging mode, but doesn't stay lit. I cannot get the buds to come on, no matter how long I leave them plugged into the computer. When plugged into the computer I can get them into pairing mode and pair them with my iPod, but can't get them to play, even when plugged into power (not sure if this is supposed to happen, anyway). I can also get the LED to flash blue, but only when plugged into the computer. Not sure what that means.

Things that have been tried already:

1. The 8-press 5-second-hold reset procedure, multiple times, both when plugged into the computer and not.

2. Different power sources and cables.

3. Cleaning of contacts with toothpick/rubbing alcohol.

The buds are around nine months old, from Best Buy, I think. Maybe Amazon (can't remember).
