    Hello Grey,

Thank you for reaching out. I'll be happy to help you with this one.

I agree with Jon. There are also several other factors that can affect the sound quality like the file format of the audio you're listening to.

I do as well but depending on the EQ settings, I notice if bass is overly boosted it will pop/crackle during certain bass heavy hits of certain songs.  Using the song that most consistently caused me the most problems, I very gradually adjusted the EQ until it no longer happened and found a sweet spot.

Bruce, I’d love to hear more! I tried reaching out to support a few days ago but have yet to receive a response.

    Hi Grey,

I just found your post while posting my own for the same issue, it's a really frustrating fault because otherwise these earbuds are near perfect for me, I love everything about them but this fault is too annoying to live with, here's what I just posted...

"I'm experiencing an annoying popping/crackling sound on certain songs and wondered if anyone else had the same issue. To give an example, I'm currently listening to the new Watchmen TV series soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross on Spotify, picking one particular song "Absent Friends and Old Ghosts", just over a minute in this sound get progressively worse, it's very crackly. It's not the only song but a good one to use for this example. The crackle sound isn't part of the music, I've listened to the same song on Bose' Soundsport earbuds and my home Harman / Kardon system so it's definitely the earbuds. I've adjusted the EQ to reduce bass and still the same issue.

This is my 2nd pair now after a pairing issue with the left earbud and noticed the same issue on that pair too but less so.

I've ordered one more pair but fear I may have to send both back as faulty as it's a really off putting sound, almost as if they can't handle it.

Any help would be appreciated. Hoping the new pair do not have the same problem, curious to know if others can test this particular track and see if yours does the same?"

Hoping the new (3rd!) pair do not have this issue but I'll report back when they arrive in the next day or two. If this pair has the same issue I'm going to have to send both pairs back and invest in another brand, something I really don't want to have to do.

    Best,

    Steve

So the third pair has arrived and low and behold the same issue (though granted the issue with my first pair was more to do with connectivity issues but I did notice it in the short time I had that pair).

What I've found, having seen Jon's comment above is the majority of EQ presets I tested cause the issue on both pairs I currently have in hand, standard factory presets "Flat" & "Timothy Olson" avoid the problem but tbh those presents are not how I like to listen to music. I found one called "Smooth" by Loud & Wired & "Hip Hop Rap (Rich & Clear)" that both sound better (more to my taste but still far from perfect for me), though the later I did hear the very occasional pop. My personal EQ pops like mad. I guess I'll just keep searching through the EQ presents or make my own like Jon suggested, I've had a play with that, just takes time to test but it should work but simply put Jaybird clearly has released a product that can't handle certain frequency's which is a shame when we spend a good £160 on a pair of buds. I'm tempted to keep one pair as they are great when not popping and the competition for sports buds isn't all that hot, I just wish I wasn't having this issue having forked out a fair amount for something that has a fault that reminds me of cheap buds you get from China :(

If you're interested I have an EQ saved called JS Vista that you should be able to search.  No idea if it's to your tastes, but I've only found one song from a soundtrack that makes it pop, and it only pops one time during the song in the most bass heavy part, I haven't noticed the issue in any other song (yet) or any other part of that particular song.  I basically set a curve mostly to my liking, and slowly slid the EQ band in the bass level down until that pop was pretty much gone.  The shape is similar to the stock Signature EQ, but a little lower on the bass, less recessed in the mids, and a little closer to neutral for highs.  Oddly enough the included stock Signature EQ causes the bass pop issue for me, to a minimal extent, but still.....  You'd think anything stock would be fail safe.

I also found an EQ called Real Balance (Expert) that has a huge bass bump, almost like you have a subwoofer, that doesn't present the pop.  However, it's a bit thin in the high bass/low mid area, leaving it (for me) less warm or full bodied than what I like.

I think the problem area is in the mid to upper bass region.  When the EQ is too high there, you have this issue.  Sub bass performance doesn't seem to pose as much of an issue.

*** Wanted to note, both EQ's you found that were mentioned (Hip Hop & Rap, and Smooth) cause the pop in my "test" song.  Which is Old Souls by Hans Zimmer from the Inception soundtrack.  There's a bass boom/kick that begins around the 1:28 mark that has been my most consistent problem area.

One more update, I created my own version of that Real Balance EQ I mentioned, called it JS Real Balance.  Was able to keep the bass pretty much as high as that EQ, even widen it a tiny bit, but adjusted the rest of the EQ to have a closer to flat curve.

Jon this was really helpful, thank you! Your JS Vista setting is really good and avoids those annoying 'pops', it's a great all round setting for most genres and definitely one to my taste. Thank you again for taking the time to share! Great soundtrack btw, I take it you are into your movies too!

Glad you like it, not a problem sharing.  And yes, definitely enjoy my movies as well, and really appreciate certain soundtracks (ie anything Hans Zimmer).

Jon, I can’t seem to find the JS real balance setting, which I would really like to test out! I found JS vista, which I do enjoy.

Sorry about that, give it a try again.

I thought I had it set to share publicly but found otherwise when looking, have it shared now.
