    I'm was having the same issue. What I found that worked was bluetoothing the headphones to my computer where they worked just fine (make sure you play around with the volume a little bit), then disconnecting from the computer and retrying on my phone. Magically worked. I'm thinking this has something to do with headphones/Android software not communicating correctly, thinking they are "muted".
